19. The Doctrine of Peace and War. Matt. 5:9; Ecclesiastes 3:8; Isaiah 2:4 KJV This lesson explores the biblical balance between peace and war. Jesus calls His followers to be peacemakers, reflecting the character of God’s children (Matt. 5:9). Yet Scripture also acknowledges the reality that, in a fallen world, there are times when war is unavoidable (Eccl. 3:8). War is always a tragic reminder of sin’s presence, but it can serve to resist evil and defend the innocent. Our ultimate hope, however, is not in human treaties or military strength, but in the reign of Christ, the Prince of Peace. Isaiah prophesied of a coming day when swords will be beaten into plowshares and nations will learn war no more (Isa. 2:4). Until that time, believers are called to pursue peace wherever possible, to endure the realities of a broken world with faith, and to look forward to the perfect peace of Christ’s eternal Kingdom. The doctrine of peace and war reminds us that Christians are both realistic about the world’s conflicts and hopeful in Christ’s promise of lasting peace. We are called to live as peacemakers now, while longing for the day when the Prince of Peace will reign forever.
