Lesson 4: Topical Study – 10 Powerful Ways to Study the
2 Peter 1:3–4 (KJV)”What are you doing with the promises of God—ignoring them, doubting them, or living by them?”
I. The Supply of His Power
• God has given us all things necessary for life and godliness through His divine power. (v.3)
II. The Security of His Promises
• His promises are “exceeding great and precious,” providing a foundation we can trust. (v.4a)
III. The Separation from Corruption
• Through His promises, we can escape the moral decay of the world and grow in holiness. (v.4b)
How to Do a Topical Bible Study (Lesson Focus):
1. Choose a Clear Topic – Focus on one biblical theme (e.g., faith, grace, forgiveness).
2. Gather Scriptures Across the Bible – Search Old and New Testament passages related to the topic.
3. Compare and Connect – Look for patterns, contrasts, and supporting truths.
4. Write a Summary in Your Own Words – Clarify your understanding and personalize the lesson.
5. Apply with Prayer and Faith – Ask God to help you live out the truth you’ve learned.
6. Teach or Share It with Others – Strengthen others as you grow yourself.
The Word of God is filled with promises. A topical study helps us dig deeper into those promises so we can live by them, not just read or recite them. The topical study method helps us see the whole counsel of God on one subject. It keeps us balanced, prevents us from twisting one verse, and enables us to apply truth in daily life. So when studying any topic, trace it back to Christ and His finished work—that’s where power and application meet.
