The Book of Ruth
The Book of Ruth
It is one of two books found in the Bible that is named after a woman, the other book being Esther. The plot of Ruth revolves around three major characters: Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz.Naomi faces crisis after crisis, including the tragic results of a worldly, unfaithful life and the death of her husband and two sons. Ruth faces the death of her husband and, along with Naomi, utter poverty. In addition, these two widows lived in a male-dominated, lawless, and violent society. There were few if any reasonable ways for a woman to make a decent living.Ruth was a foreigner from Moab, one of the bitter enemies of Israel. Among the Israelites, Ruth was a stranger who was looked upon with suspicion. The future for these two childless widows was dark and bleak,a grim, harsh, oppressive future.Ruth is bereaved, but then meets a man who is kind to her and who ends up redeeming and marrying her. They all live happily ever after.
