Baptism – The First Step of Obedience. Matthew 28:19–20 ; Romans 6:4 KJVBaptism is an important part of the Christian life and represents a believer’s first act of obedience after salvation. In Matthew 28:19–20, Jesus gave the Great Commission, instructing His followers to go, teach, and baptize in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Baptism does not save us, but it is a public declaration that we belong to Christ and are committed to following His commands.I. The Meaning of Baptism Baptism symbolizes identification with Jesus Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection. It shows that the believer has turned from their old life of sin and is beginning a new life in Christ. It is an outward expression of an inward change.II. The Pattern of Baptism The biblical pattern of baptism is immersion in water, following personal faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus Himself was baptized, setting the example for all believers. Baptism comes after salvation and is done in obedience to Christ’s command.III. The Blessings of Baptism Baptism brings spiritual encouragement, joy, and a deeper sense of commitment to God. It strengthens a believer’s faith, unites them with the church body, and opens the door to continued growth and obedience in their walk with Christ.Baptism marks the beginning of a new journey with Christ. As the first step of obedience, it demonstrates faith, commitment, and a willingness to follow Jesus according to His Word.
