The crowd was so large that they could not enter through the door, so the friends climbed onto the roof, tore it open, and lowered the man before the Lord. Their determination reveals deep faith—faith that Jesus both could and would meet their friend’s greatest need.When Jesus saw their faith, He did something unexpected. Before addressing the man’s physical condition, Jesus spoke to the deeper, eternal issue: “Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.” This shocked the scribes and Pharisees. They understood what many people today fail to see—only God can forgive sins. They accused Jesus of blasphemy in their hearts, but Jesus, knowing their thoughts, posed a penetrating question: Which is easier, to say, “Thy sins be forgiven thee,” or to say, “Rise up and walk”?To prove that He had divine authority—not only to heal bodies but to forgive sins—Jesus commanded the paralyzed man to stand, pick up his bed, and go home. Every other need is temporary; forgiveness is eternal. Sin separates us from God, and no effort, ritual, or religious practice can erase guilt. Only Jesus can do that.
