Matthew (Levi)_11
Matthew (Levi) From Profit to Purpose Luke 5:27–32; 3:12–13 KJV We explore the transformation of Matthew (also known as Levi) — a man who went from being a profitable tax collector to a purpose-driven disciple of Jesus.Matthew and His Mess.Rejected (Lk. 5:27a):Matthew was a tax collector — seen as a traitor and social outcast. Rejected by religious and cultural standards, he lived on the fringes, dismissed by many.Robber (Lk. 3:12–13):Like other tax collectors, he was associated with greed and corruption. His wealth came at the cost of integrity, and he was labeled a thief by his own people.Matthew and His Messiah.Repentant (Lk. 5:27b–28):When Jesus said, “Follow Me,” Matthew didn’t hesitate. He left everything behind — wealth, status, and his old life — to follow Christ. His repentance was immediate and complete.Recruiter (Lk. 5:29–32):
Not only did Matthew change personally, he wanted others to meet Jesus too. He hosted a banquet to introduce fellow sinners to the Savior, becoming a bold recruiter for the Kingdom.Matthew desired serious change, not more cash. Jesus took this wealthy, educated “reject” and gave him something far more valuable: purpose. His transformation was a “quick change” — from tax booth to disciple — showing us it’s never too late to start fresh. His new name, Matthew, means “Gift of God” — a reminder that no matter our past, we can become a gift to the world when we follow Jesus.
