He did not create Adam and Eve to divorce one another; he created them for a lifelong union and lifelong intimacy. He is against divorce. The next thing I want to say is this: divorce is not the unpardonable sin. If you are divorced it doesn’t mean that you have blown it forever, neither does it mean that the best you can hope for is second-class status as a citizen in the kingdom of God. Unfortunately, that is the attitude with which we treat some divorced people.
Did you know there are denominations that refuse to ordain a man who has been divorced, even if the divorce occurred long before he became a Christian, but they will ordain a man who has committed murder? Does that make sense? No it doesn’t.
True, God hates divorce. He hates all sin, and divorce is always the result of someone’s sin. Maybe you were the innocent victim in your divorce. Or maybe you weren’t. The truth is that I haven’t seen many cases of divorce where both parties didn’t contribute to the cause of the breakup. Either way, if you are divorced, God’s mercy and forgiveness is just as available to you as it is to anyone else.
