2 Kings
The Book of 2 Kings is the second part of a historical narrative that continues from 1 Kings, forming a crucial segment of the Old Testament. Traditionally attributed to the prophet Jeremiah, 2 Kings spans approximately 300 years, covering the history of the Israelite kingdoms from the end of Elisha’s ministry to the fall of Jerusalem and the exile of Judah. It provides a detailed account of the decline and eventual destruction of both the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah.2 Kings picks up where 1 Kings leaves off, detailing the reigns of various kings in both Israel and Judah. The book opens with the transition of power from King David’s lineage to the subsequent rulers, showing how both kingdoms grapple with issues of leadership, faithfulness, and political turmoil. The narrative culminates in the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians in 586 BCE, marking the end of the Davidic dynasty’s rule over Judah and the beginning of the Babylonian exile.
