1 Kings
The Book of 1 Kings is a historical narrative that forms part of the Old Testament, detailing the history of Israel from the end of King David’s reign to the fall of the northern kingdom of Israel. It is the first of two books that continue the history begun in 2 Samuel, with 2 Kings following as a continuation. Traditionally attributed to the prophet Jeremiah, 1 Kings covers a span of approximately 120 years, from around 970 BCE to 850 BCE.1 Kings begins with the transition of leadership from King David to his son Solomon, marking a significant moment in Israel’s history. Solomon’s reign is noted for its prosperity, wisdom, and the construction of the First Temple in Jerusalem, which becomes a central symbol of Israelite worship. However, after Solomon’s death, the kingdom faces internal strife and division, setting the stage for the eventual split into the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah.
