THE LOVE DARE BIBLE STUDY

SESSION 5 – OCTOBER 21, 2026

You cannot fully love someone while refusing to forgive them.

“Forgiveness is not saying the hurt didn’t happen. Forgiveness is refusing to let the hurt control your future.”

This lesson is often one of the most emotional and healing sessions in The Love Dare because many participants begin dealing with wounds they have carried for years. It provides a natural opportunity for prayer, restoration, and deeper spiritual growth.

Love Never Fails: Forgiveness and Grace

Forgiveness and grace allow relationships to heal, grow, and reflect the love of Christ.

Outline

  • Forgiveness is a choice
  • Forgiveness breaks bitterness
  • Forgiveness brings freedom

You cannot move forward while holding on to yesterday’s hurts.

  • Grace offers second chances
  • Grace shows compassion
  • Grace reflects God’s heart

Give others the same grace God gives you.

  • Release old wounds
  • Trust God with the hurt
  • Walk forward in peace

Forgiveness frees the person doing the forgiving.

“Love grows when forgiveness replaces bitterness and grace replaces judgment.”

The six major lessons:

  1. Patience and Kindness
  2. Selfishness and Anger
  3. Communication and Respect
  4. Commitment and Sacrifice
  5. Forgiveness and Grace
  6. Living the Love Dare Daily

A great final takeaway is:

“The Love Dare is not about becoming a better spouse, friend, or family member first—it is about becoming more like Jesus Christ.”

Every relationship eventually faces hurt.

Someone says something they should not say.

Someone fails to keep a promise.

Someone disappoints us.

The question is not whether we will be hurt.

The question is what we will do when we are hurt.

Many relationships struggle because people remember every offense but forget every act of kindness.

The Bible teaches that forgiveness is not optional for believers.

Just as Christ has forgiven us, we are called to forgive others.

Tonight we will learn how forgiveness and grace can bring healing and restoration to our relationships.

A. Forgiveness Is a Choice

Forgiveness is not based on feelings.

Forgiveness is an act of obedience to God.

Many times we choose forgiveness before we feel forgiveness.

B. Forgiveness Releases the Debt

When we forgive, we choose not to hold the offense against another person.

It does not mean the offense was acceptable.

It means we place the matter in God’s hands.

C. Forgiveness Reflects Christ

No one has forgiven more than Jesus.

At the Cross, He paid the debt for our sins.

Discussion Question

Why is forgiveness often difficult for people?

A. Grace Gives What Is Not Deserved

God’s grace is His unmerited favor.

We did not earn salvation.

We received it through Christ.

B. Grace Changes Relationships

Grace allows us to:

  • Be patient with imperfections
  • Show compassion
  • Offer second chances

C. Grace Sees People Through God’s Eyes

Everyone is a work in progress.

Just as God is still working on us, He is working on others.

Discussion Question

Can you remember a time when someone showed you grace when you needed it most?

A. Bitterness Keeps Wounds Alive

Bitterness is like carrying a heavy burden everywhere you go.

It affects:

  • Our thoughts
  • Our attitudes
  • Our relationships

B. Healing Begins When We Release the Hurt

We cannot change the past.

But through Christ we can find healing from the past.

C. God Wants Freedom, Not Bondage

Unforgiveness keeps us imprisoned.

Forgiveness sets us free.

What are some practical ways believers can release past hurts to God?

The Cross is the greatest demonstration of forgiveness ever given.

Jesus bore every sin, every failure, every offense upon Himself.

If God has forgiven us of an eternal debt, how can we refuse to forgive a temporary offense?

Forgiveness does not excuse wrongdoing.

Forgiveness releases the burden and places justice in God’s hands.

Grace and forgiveness flow naturally from a heart that has truly experienced Calvary.

Ask yourself:

1. Is there someone I need to forgive?

Answer: Forgiveness begins with a willing heart.

2. Am I extending grace to others as God extends grace to me?

Answer: Grace changes how we treat people.

3. Am I holding on to past hurts?

Answer: Healing begins when we surrender them to Christ.

1. What happens when I refuse to forgive?

Answer: Bitterness grows and damages relationships.

2. How has God demonstrated grace in my life?

Answer: Through His mercy, forgiveness, and patience.

3. What burden do I need to release to God today?

Answer: Whatever is keeping me from experiencing peace and freedom.

Imagine carrying a heavy backpack filled with rocks everywhere you go.

Each rock represents:

  • A hurt
  • A disappointment
  • A betrayal
  • An offense

The longer you carry it, the heavier it becomes.

Forgiveness is not pretending the rocks never existed.

Forgiveness is laying the backpack down at the feet of Jesus and allowing Him to carry what you were never meant to carry alone.

Assignment for Next Session

Complete Love Dare Days 29–35.

As you complete each day’s challenge:

  • Pray for a forgiving spirit.
  • Look for opportunities to extend grace.
  • Release past hurts to God.
  • Record what God teaches you about forgiveness.

Come prepared to share one lesson God taught you during this week’s Love Dare journey.
