WHY TWELVE STONES?
WHY TWELVE STONES? “When God Put a Nation into a Memorial” Joshua 4:1–9, 19–24 KJV Why did God command Joshua to take exactly twelve stones from the Jordan River? Why not seven, ten, or twenty? Because those twelve stones carried a message greater than the stones themselves! When Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground, God commanded twelve men, one from each tribe, to carry a stone from the riverbed and establish a memorial at Gilgal. Those stones would remind future generations of God’s mighty power, His covenant faithfulness, and His miraculous deliverance. In this Sunday School lesson, we trace the significance of the twelve tribes throughout Scripture—from the sons of Jacob to the twelve pillars at Sinai, Elijah’s restored altar, the twelve apostles, and the New Jerusalem. We discover that God was not merely preserving the memory of a miracle—He was teaching an entire nation never to forget the God who brought them through! The twelve stones remind us that God remembers His promises, preserves His testimony, and calls His people to pass the truth of His mighty works to the next generation.
