Dog Tags of a Christian. 1 Peter 4:12–19 (KJV) Just as every soldier carries dog tags that identify who they belong to, where they come from, and what they stand for, Peter reminds believers that Christians also bear spiritual “dog tags.” These marks of identity become especially visible in times of trial. Peter warns the church that fiery trials are not strange or unexpected—they are part of the Christian calling. Suffering for Christ is evidence that we belong to Him.
Peter urges believers not to be ashamed when they suffer as Christians but to glorify God in their trials. Suffering becomes a kind of badge that proves our allegiance. God uses these hardships to purify His people and to reveal the genuineness of their faith. Unlike the judgment that awaits the ungodly, the trials believers face are refining, not condemning.
Finally, Peter calls the church to commit their souls to God as to a faithful Creator. Even when the battle is intense, the Christian’s identity is secure: we belong to Christ, are kept by Christ, and are called to honor Christ.
On Veterans Day, as we honor those who have worn the uniform of our nation, we also remember that every Christian is enlisted in the service of the Lord. Our spiritual dog tags—faith, endurance, obedience, and loyalty to Christ—identify us as soldiers in His kingdom. And when trials come, they simply confirm whose side we’re on.
