That is about the distance a condemned prisoner walks from the cell to the electric chair.
Thirty-nine slow, heavy steps.
Every step echoes judgment.
Step one — leaving the cell.
Step two — walking past the bars.
Step three — hearing the door close behind you.
And with each step comes the realization:
There is no turning back.
But when I read the Bible, that number reminds me of something else.
Jesus endured thirty-nine lashes before the Cross.
And those lashes were taken for usThirty-nine steps lead a condemned man to death.
Thirty-nine lashes led Jesus to the Cross.
But the Cross did not end with death.
It ended with an empty tomb.
